U of I Release:

CHICAGO – Two University of Illinois golfers advanced to the Western Amateur semifinals on Friday, as senior Brian Campbell and freshman Nick Hardy both won two matches on the day. Hardy was dominant, winning 6 & 4 and 5 & 4, while Campbell earned a 2 & 1 win and pulled out a 1-up victory in 23 holes in the afternoon. Junior Charlie Danielson lost his round of 16 match to Vanderbilt’s Hunter Stewart in the morning. Semifinals will be held Saturday morning, with the championship taking place Saturday afternoon.

Hardy will face Texas sophomore Beau Hossler, who needed 19 holes to beat Western Amateur medalist Doug Ghim in the quarterfinals, Saturday at 7:30 a.m. Hossler is currently No. 7 in the world according to the Scratch Players World Amateur Ranking (SPWAR), while Hardy is No. 137. Campbell, No. 23 in the SPWAR, draws San Diego State senior and No. 12 Xander Schauffele, at 7:45 a.m.

Campbell took down New Zealander Joshua Munn (No. 63 SPWAR) 2 & 1 in the round of 16 before edging Australian Cory Crawford (No. 144 SPWAR) 1-up in 23 holes in the afternoon. Against Munn, Campbell made a late surge by winning Nos. 12 and 13 to go 1-up with five to go. He took another hole at No. 16 then halved the 17th for the win.

In the quarterfinals, Campbell trailed by two early on before winning holes 6 and 7 to square the match. He and Crawford played even for five holes but Crawford won No. 12 to go 1-up. Campbell stormed back, though, winning Nos. 13, 14 and 16 to go dormie at 2-up with two holes remaining. Crawford wasn’t finished, though, winning on Nos. 17 and 18 to force extra holes. The pair halved the first four playoff holes before Campbell rolled in a birdie at the 14th and Crawford made par, giving the Illini the 1-up win in 23 holes.

Hardy stormed past Aussie Geoff Drakeford, ranked No. 2 in the SPWAR 6 & 4 in the morning and blitzed Texas freshman and No. 25 amateur in the world Scottie Scheffler 5 & 4 in the quarterfinals. The incoming Illini freshman lost hole No. 3 against Drakeford but never dropped another to the Aussie, leading by three at the turn and finishing the match with victories at Nos. 10, 12 and 14. Against the highly touted Scheffler, Hardy dropped only two holes in the entire match. Hardy made an early run with wins on holes No. 3, 5 and 6 to go 3-up. He added wins on Nos. 9 and 11 for a commanding 5-up lead before dropping No. 13. But he won No. 14 with a birdie to take the match 5 & 4.
