Illini football one last time in 2017

Nine seniors will play final game Saturday against No. 23 Northwestern

CHAMPAIGN (WCIA) -- The Illinois football team will play its final game of the season Saturday afternoon when No. 23 Northwestern comes to Memorial Stadium. The Illini (2-9) will recognize their nine seniors before the game.

This has been one of the worst seasons in recent history for the Illini, who still haven't beat a Power 5 team this season and have lost nine in-a-row. Illinois' offense, or lack there of, is a big reason why. It ranks 124th out of 129 teams in the country in total offense, averaging just 16.2 points per game. The defense has been one of the lone bright spots. The Illini are first in the nation in forced fumbles with 17.

"Unfortunately it has slipped pretty far this season but there's one more game left," Illinois junior linebacker Tre Watson said. "If you can't get up or excited for one more game, especially playing our biggest rival, than that's on you. I don't know why you're playing football so you just have to get them excited and it's one more game to finish this season off."

Illinois and Northwestern kickoff Saturday afternoon at 3 p.m.
