Illini freshman D.J. Williams improving

Simeon product D.J. Williams set career high in scoring last two games

CHAMPAIGN -- Illinois freshmen D.J. Williams knows his role.

The Chicago Simeon product is playing his best basketball of the season the last week, setting a new career high with six points in last Wednesday's game at Rutgers.  He raised the bar in Sunday's loss to Iowa, netting eight points on 4-of-7 shooting, to go along with four rebounds, in just 15 minutes of play.

"I'm doing a better job of preparing myself for games," Williams said.  "Coach (Groce) always tells me to stay ready, stay ready, so I think my preparation was great."

Williams started the first game of the season for the Illini (11-13, 3-8 B1G) but only played sparingly five out of the next six games.  The 6-foot-7 guard is averaging a little more than nine minutes per game this season, scoring 1.7 points, but he's found his niche the last two outings, playing a combined 30 minutes.

"I'm being more consistent about what I do in practice and even off the court," Williams said.   "I know my role and I think I did a great job executing my role (against Iowa).  I just wanted to come into the game and bring as much energy as possible to bring my team back up."
