WCIA -- Peach Jam 2017 is in the books. So where do the Illini stand with some of their top targets? Craig Choate and Derek Piper discuss.
"What do the big AAU programs think of the new Illini coaching staff?"
"I would say that this staff has gotten a great reception from those big AAU programs. Most notably the Mac Irvin Fire. I think that Brad Underwood and Chin Coleman have done a great job here in the first couple of months in their tenure. Maybe even in better position now than a lot of those other staffs every had. So when you think about that program, a lot of the top in-state players come from there, especially those point guards that Illinois has tried to get, and not gotten. I think that Illinois now has a legit chance with Ayo Dosunmu and going forward you look into the future, guys like Adam Miller at Peoria Manual. There's a lot of talent in that program and I think the staff has gotten a great reception from them."
"Tim Finke playing for MeanStreets this summer. How does he look, and where do the Illini stand with him?
"Tim Finke definitely saved his best for last, having 17 points against Team Takeover, who's in the EYBL Peach Jam finals today (Sunday). He didn't necessarily have a great week, his shot was off and he struggled in some of the earlier games. But obviously Tim is a good player, he makes winning plays out there on the court. He got his shot going in that last game. He hit three 3's and had 17 points so good for him to finish strong heading into next week. I think Illinois is very strong with him. I think that they've got in a really good position over the last couple of months. He took two visits to campus this past month and I think they did a really good job of showing him the system, he got to watch workouts which is a big thing for him. I think that they're right there with a lot of the other programs with him. I know Vandy has done really well with him but I would say that Illinois is probably in as good of position as anybody right now."
