CHAMPAIGN, Ill. - The Illinois football program is mourning the loss of one of it's own.  Former Illinois offensive lineman Shawn Afryl died suddenly Monday night after he collapsed during a workout, while getting ready for his senior season at Winona State University in Minnesota.  Afryl was a member of the Illinois football team for three years, but he graduated early and planned to use the remainder of his eligibility at Winona State.

The Skokie-native appeared in just one game for Illinois before earning a political science degree in August.  He was just 22 years old.

"All of us in the Fighting Illini football family are greatly saddened by the Shawn's passing last night," head coach Tim Beckman said in a statement Tuesday.  "He was a great teammate and a dedicated student.  Our thoughts and prayers are with his family."

Afryl's mom has set up a website to help raise money for his funeral.  Click here if you'd like to donate.
