Being chosen for his fifth PGA cup is certainly an honor for Small, and now his team will try to win without him. They will be playing at Wolf Run in Zionsville, Ind. Illinois is coming off a 6th-place finish last weekend at Olympia Fields. Even without their coach the Illini say they will continue to improve.
"He preaches the same things to us every week, so we all have an idea of how he wants us to play on the course," said sophomore Charlie Danielson. "We're going to take what he taught us last week and what he taught us over the last couple years use it this week."
Assistant coach Justin Fetcho will lead Illinois in Small's absence.
"It's not like he's really going to be gone; it's just his presence," Fetcho said. "He physically won't be there, but these guys are hearing in their minds the same things he preaches week in and week out. It will be like he is there because those guys remember those things."
Illinois tees off at the Wolf Run Invitational Saturday.
