Illini signee transfers to Danville

Arieal Scott leaves Urbana, hopes to play for Vikings or graduate early

DANVILLE (WCIA) -- Illinois basketball signee Arieal Scott left Urbana High School recently and is now enrolled at Danville. The No 39 recruit in the country, according to Prospects Nation, signed her National Letter of Intent to play for Illinois Wednesday morning, then went to her first day at Danville High School.

"Just handling everything together, I just take it one day at a time," Scott said. "Just keep the faith in the Lord and just hope everything works out the way it should be."

Scott began the school year at Urbana but then decided to move to Danville, the same place she started her high school career. The 5-foot-9 guard played her freshman and sophomore seasons at Schlarman Academy before transferring to Urbana. She was then ruled ineligible for the majority of her junior year for violating IHSA residency by-laws. Now at Danville, Scott has to wait 30 days and be cleared by the IHSA before she can play in a game for the Vikings.

Originally committed to Duke, Scott reopened her recruitment in the spring and decided stay home and play for Illinois. First-year Illini head coach Nancy Fahey signed three players to her inaugural class, including Scott.

"I never thought I could play Division I basketball so signing yesterday just made all my dreams come true and it was such an emotional time but such a good time," Scott said.

If Scott doesn't get clearance from the IHSA to play as a senior, she wants to graduate high school early and enroll at Illinois in January. She won't be able to join the women's basketball team officially though until June. That's because the Illini don't have a scholarship available for her, meaning she will have to pay her own way for a semester.
