Illini volleyball ready for Sweet 16 rematch

Illinois will face Michigan State Friday afternoon at Penn St. Regional

CHAMPAIGN (WCIA) -- The Illinois volleyball team is saving its best for last. The Illini (23-10) have won five straight matches heading into the program's 17th Sweet 16 appearance, including an upset victory over No. 8 seed Washington on the Huskies' home floor. It advanced them to the Penn State Regional this weekend where they will face a familiar foe, Michigan State. The Spartans took down the Illini in straight sets in East Lansing last month.

"In this scenario, I think we're playing them on a neutral floor," Illinois head coach Chris Tamas said. "We didn't get a chance to play them here at home which you would like to do. You'd like to actually maybe play them your third time. We're kind of the underdog, so to speak and I think our team thrives on that a little bit so I'm excited to face the challenge Michigan State provides us."

"I think it does help us a little bit to have played them before," Illinois sophomore outside hitter Jacqueline Quade said. "We already kind of have an idea of what to expect. It kind of works in both of our advantages as far as getting a good scouting report."

First serve between Illinois and Michigan State is set for Friday at 3 p.m. in University Park, Pennsylvania.
