Illinois-Missouri renew rivalry

CHAMPAIGN (WCIA) -- The Illinois and Missouri rivalry is coming back to the football field. The two schools announced on Monday a four year contract to renew the rivalry in 2026.

Instead of the neutral site in St. Louis, like they did six time from 2002 to 2010, this contract is a home-and-home series with games in Champaign and Columbia.

"It's a great chance to bring two great conferences together, the SEC and the Big Ten. A lot of overlapping recruiting areas, a lot of overlapping fan bases and it's a chance to marry all that up together," athletic director Josh Whitman said. "Just made a lot of sense."

"There was a time when that was one of those games that you look forward to seeing," Lovie Smith added. I know geography wise where we are, I know the fans should like it. It's far away but eventually it will get here so I think it's a good thing. All in favor of it."

The series starts September 26th, 2026 in Champaign.
