WCIA -- Illinois senior Breanna Wonderly threw 173 pitches, only allowing two runs in 12 innings of work, and Nicole Evans hit a walk-off single to lead the Illini to a 3-2 win over Marshall in the first game of the NCAA Lexington Regional Friday afternoon.
"I went in there and my only thought was, end this for Bre(anna Wonderly)," Evans said. "She pitched her butt of out there. End it for our team and end it for Bre. I didn't need to hit a home run, just needed to get it to the outfield."
"It was definitely a staring contest like who is going to blink first? Especially the flow and pace of that particular game," Illinois head coach Tyra Perry said.
Illinois (38-18) advances in the winners' bracket to play host No. 14 Kentucky (37-17) Saturday morning at 11 a.m. CT.
