Illinois volleyball set for NCAA tournament

Back in the Big Dance after missing out last season, Illini face Hawaii

CHAMPAIGN (WCIA) -- Illinois volleyball coach Chris Tamas set the bar high his first season in Champaign. Tamas has the Illini (21-10) back in the NCAA tournament for the eighth time in the last 10 years. Illinois failed to make the Big Dance in former coach Kevin Hambly's last year with the team. Not only are the Illini in, they've won three straight matches coming into Friday's first round opponent, Hawaii.

"The goal is always to put it all together every game and we're getting more consistent at that as the year goes on," Tamas said. "So I've been happy with the improvement. Of course, we're rewarded at the end of the season."

"A lot of things are clicking for us right now," Illinois middle blocker Ali Bastianelli said. "Our passing has been phenomenal. I think that was a huge key for us winning against Minnesota. I think if we keep up our passing then we can do anything that we want."

"Going into this weekend it'll be a lot about how we decide to come out more so than how they do," Illinois setter Jordyn Poulter said.

The winner of Illinois-Hawaii (Friday, 7 p.m. CT) will face either the host school, No. 8 seed Washington, or LIU-Brooklyn in the second round Saturday.
