"It's my job to put them in areas where they can succeed"

Illinois basketball coach Brad Underwood taking blame for recent struggles

CHAMPAIGN (WCIA) -- The Illinois men's basketball team has shown flashes of what the program could look like, a viable Big Ten contender. Illini head coach Brad Underwood's squad has also struggled in several key areas; starting games, turnovers and late-game scenarios. All three once again showed up in a 74-69 loss to New Mexico St. at the United Center Saturday night.

"We are young," Underwood said. "We're putting freshmen out there and guys who haven't been in those moments before. It's my job to put them in areas where they can succeed and be successful and I'm obviously not doing that but along with that, we've got to have some pride in executing and doing the small things."

Illinois returns to the court Saturday in St. Louis for the annual Braggin' Rights game against Missouri.
