Lovie Smith: Two years later

Illinois football coach celebrates two years on the job Wednesday

CHAMPAIGN (WCIA) -- Two years later, the ground work is still being laid for Illinois football under head coach Lovie Smith but the Illini are a lot further along in the rebuilding process than when the former NFL coach was formally announced on March 7, 2016.

"Well I know a lot more about our players, the program, the expectations and all that," Smith said when asked to reflect about his two years in Champaign. "Two years have gone by quickly and as I'm reminiscing and thinking about it right now. Excited about what's happened in the past but just so much excitement about these next years as we move forward with our program. So many good things happening around here."

Smith has struggled on the field, posting a 5-19 record in two seasons. The numbers are worse in the Big Ten conference where the team is just 2-16. Smith is two years into a six-year contract that's set to pay him $21 million.
