"Some games you're just really happy to find a 'W'"

Illini battle through turnovers, poor 3-point shooting to end non-con with a win

CHAMPAIGN (WCIA) -- Sometimes just getting a win is good enough, even if it's not pretty. That's exactly what the Illinois men's basketball team did Saturday, beating Grand Canyon 62-58 in the last non-conference game of the season for the Illini.

"There's some games that you're just really really happy to find a 'W' and this was one," Illinois head coach Brad Underwood said. "I told our team I'm ecstatic because I'm not sure a couple of weeks ago we would have won this one and the process is so important to everything that we do."

"This is how it's going to be the rest of the season," Illinois junior forward Leron Black said. "Conference play is tough, there not going to be too many blowouts in conference play so it's good that we're gaining this experience and learning how to play in these tough situations at the end of games."

With the win, Illinois improved to 10-5 overall and finishes the non-conference portion of its schedule with a 10-3 mark, the same record at this point as last season. After playing two Big Ten games the first week of December, league play continues this week. Illinois visits Minnesota Wednesday night.
