Vukic claims first professional title

Illini senior wins JSM Futures Singles

URBANA (WCIA) -- Entering this week's JSM Futures Tournament, Illinois Men's Tennis player Aleks Vukic had never won a professional title before.

That didn't mean he hadn't won his fair share of matches, compiling a 94-3 record in his three years at Illinois. Saturday the Illini senior had a chance to claim his first professional championship in front of a home crowd.

Vukic defeated Deiton Baughman 7-5, 4-6, 6-2 to claim the JSM Futures Singles title.

"It hasn't sunk in really yet, but honestly it's more relieving than it was," Vukic siad. "I dropped some leads during that match because of nerves and just trying to think ahead, and really in that last game I just tried to stay composed and luckily I got through it. I'm happy right now. I'm still coming back in the fall. I might just play more pro tournaments in the fall, but I'm coming back here. I just love it here. I've improved so much so why not staying here?"

Vukic will return to Illinois as the program record holder for most singles wins in a season.
