"We know we can turn it around"

Illinois football coach Lovie Smith talks recruiting, early signing period

CHAMPAIGN (WCIA) -- For the first time in NCAA history, all high school football recruits will be able to sign their National Letter of Intent early. The three-day period starts Wednesday and runs through Friday. Nearly the entire 2018 recruiting class for Illinois is expected to sign and officially become an Illini, a welcome sight for head coach Lovie Smith and his staff.

"For the guys that really feel like they know where they want to spend the next four years playing football, why not let them make it official? So really anxious to see how it turns out but for us we like and it we're going to sign quite a few players," Smith said.

Smith and the Illini are coming off a 2-10 season. They have the worst ranked class in the Big Ten right now, 14th according to 247 Sports, but Smith is confident in the program's trajectory.

"We know we can turn it around and in order to do that, we have to change our roster," he said. "We have to do a better job coaching and a lot of other things have to go on behind the scenes but changing the roster the roster is a big part of the overhaul right now and it's under way."
