Whitman weighs in on Illinois mascot talk

Illini athletic director not opposed to mascot tal, "it's about unifying the UI"

CHAMPAIGN (WCIA) -- Could a mascot be coming for the University of Illinois? Do the Illini even need one? Chancellor Robert Jones has said previously he's in favor of the idea. Athletic director Josh Whitman says he's not against it, as long as it unifies Illini Nation.

"To me it's about a broader question, it's about unifying the University of Illinois," Whitman said. "Our alumni, our students, behind a common purpose and common idea. Perhaps a mascot is behind that, perhaps it's not but certainly athletics is happy and willing to participate in a conversation in that effort and we look forward to again seeing our stakeholders come together around a common idea of the University of Illinois."

The Chancellor's office is spearheading the matter. A spokesperson said there is no timetable moving forward.
