CHAMPAIGN, Ill. (UI Release) - Illinois (22-15) couldn't get the bats going on Wednesday night at Busch Stadium, falling 5-2 to Missouri (19-21) and snapping its four-game winning streak. The Tigers only mustered five hits and two of their five runs were unearned, while the Illini had six hits, led by freshman Ryne Roper who went 2-for-3. "This is always a great experience to play at a big league ballpark, but we didn't get our jobs done tonight," head coach Dan Hartleb said. "We had advantage counts and didn't put good swings on pitches. We didn't have a very composed night at the plate. We need to get deeper in counts and get their pitch total up. We made some mistakes and will need to be better on Friday."
URBANA, Ill. - The Illinois men's tennis team will be the No. 2 seed in the Big Ten Tournament this weekend, and their success this season has been thanks in large part to junior Farris Gosea. Gosea hasn't lost a Big Ten singles match all year. His recruitment to Illinois was anything but ordinary, and WCIA 3's Matt Wettersten has more on the leap of faith it took to get him to the U of I.
KNOXVILLE, Tenn. - Tennessee has granted Lanphier's Larry Austin Jr. a release from his National Letter of Intent. Austin will now find another place to play his college basketball. He signed with Tennessee in the fall, but head coach Cuonzo Martin left to become the new head coach at California. Now Austin will get a chance to sign with another school. The Lanphier point guard had more than a dozen offers including Illinois, Missouri, Memphis and Kansas State.
ST. JOSEPH, Ill. - St. Joseph-Ogden softball coach Randy Wolken became the first coach in IHSA history to win 900 games after his Spartans beat Fisher 9-5 Tuesday night. CHAMPAIGN, Ill. - The Central baseball team improved to 19-1 on the season with a 3-1 home victory over rival Centennial.
CHAMPAIGN, Ill. (UI Release) - Illinois picked up its fourth straight win behind a strong pitching performance in a 3-2 victory over Eastern Illinois on Tuesday. Starter Rob McDonnell improved to 3-0 with two hits and two runs allowed in five innings, redshirt-sophomore Andrew Mamlic gave up one hit in three shutout stanzas and closer Tyler Jay registered his sixth save after surrendering two hits in the ninth.

CHAMPAIGN, Ill. (UI Release) – Junior guard Ivory Crawford was named Illinois’ most valuable player at the team’s postseason banquet hosted by the Courtsiders Monday night at the iHotel. Head coach Matt Bollant and his staff also honored Amber Moore as the team’s lone senior and recognized her with commemorative basketballs for scoring 1,000 career points and breaking school records for single-season and career three-pointers made. In addition, junior forward Nia Oden was named the team’s defensive player of the year, freshmen Jacqui Grant and Ashley McConnell were named most improved, and junior guard Kyley Simmons earned the Courtsiders Illini Spirit Award. Crawford averaged 14.4 points per game and led the Illini in rebounding at 5.9 per game. She also had a team-best 66 steals and was second with 62 assists. She ranked 12th in the Big Ten in scoring, 20th in rebounding, third in steals and third in offensive rebounds (2.8 per game).
