$1 land deal!

ROSSVILLE -- The village has seen its fair share of economic trouble. Now, leaders are trying to do something new to bring people back to town.
ROSSVILLE -- The village has seen its fair share of economic trouble. Now, leaders are trying to do something new to bring people back to town. WCIA-3's Anthony Antoine has more.

The village is selling land for $1! It's an unbelievable price for a spot to build a home. But that one dollar could add up to a whole lot more for Vermilion County.

"It's been difficult to get things off the ground, so we offered it for a dollar."

Up to a fifth of an acre of land. Former mayor, Terry Prillman, came up with the idea.

"There is no catch. There is no catch to the dollar lots."

Mayor Richard Queen says the village will pay for the rest; that's $7,000 - $9,000.

"We will be reimbursed the total cost of the lots and the infrastructure through real estate tax."

It's money they plan to use for the community.

"One of the reasons we started this is to increase population that will help out the school system."

To upgrade buildings and technology for students.

"Let's face it. If the people move to Rossville, they have to do their shopping someplace else. They have to do it at either Hoopeston or Danville."

In the late 1990's, businesses like GM left the Danville and Hoopeston areas. People in Rossville lost their jobs. But, new businesses are starting up in Vermilion County.

"Meijers is going to open. They just opened a new Kohl's."

You can see it's working. These houses are all built on $1 lots.

"It's a win-win situation for everybody."

You have 90-days to get the financing and a builder for your home. The deed will then be transferred. Your house must be built within the year. So far, four homes have been built.
