Back to class

CHAMPAIGN -- Drivers in the area saw something Monday they haven't seen in months. Students were walking to and from school.

Most students in the area head back to school this week. On their way there, many students walked or rode bikes.

Crossing guards stand watch to make sure all of them get there and back safely. Police were also on out and about to make sure drivers are following the rules for school zones.

The speed limit drops to 20 miles per hour when students are going to-and-from class and it's also against the law to use your phone for texting, calling or anything else. Authorities say everyone needs to be involved in keeping kids safe.

Police say there weren't any major issues for the first day. They put up a few special signs around the city to remind people to slow down and pay attention.

It's not just for the first week of class. Police will be around city schools throughout the year, cracking down on distracted drivers and people who are speeding.
