BGA: State shuttle flight half-full 47% of the time

SPRINGFIELD -- An investigation by the Better Government Association found a popular flight for state leaders isn't necessarily filling the seats.
SPRINGFIELD -- An investigation by the Better Government Association found a popular flight for state leaders isn't necessarily filling the seats. IDOT runs two daily shuttle flights between Chicago and Springfield for state leaders and staffers. The 9-seat planes cost $3,000 to operate per flight, according to the BGA.

That means, if the flight is full, the cost to the taxpayer is approximately $600 per person for a round-trip flight. But the BGA found flights are rarely full.

Approximately 47 percent of the time, four or fewer people were on the planes during the one year and nine months the BGA monitored. Nine percent of the time only one person was on board. Twelve percent of the time only two passengers flew on the shuttle flight.

This, while WCIA-3 News searched online and found round-trip flights from Chicago to Springfield next week for a little more than $200.

As a result of the BGA's investigation, IDOT issued a directive which won't allow these shuttle flights to take off with fewer than four people on board.
