Carle gets the OK to expand

URBANA -- Carle Hospital is getting bigger.
URBANA -- Carle Hospital is getting bigger. It got the OK to expand its emergency room and construction is set to begin this fall.

Lynne Barnes is Vice President of Hospital Operations at Carle. She says they need the extra space to meet the higher demand they've noticed the past few years.

Just last year they saw more than 65,000 people come in the ER doors. A lot of those patients ended up in overflow areas like the hallway or waiting.

Carle leaders hope the expansion would change that. It will be a 14,000 square foot expansion with some renovations to the current department. The addition will be a one-story building next to the new Heart and Vascular Center that's also being built.

The addition includes more beds, another trauma and safe room, as well as new equipment. A radiology suite will also be included. It's expected to be finished by 2014.
