Change could come to the capitol

SPRINGFIELD -- Tuesday's election results could cause big changes at the state capitol.
SPRINGFIELD -- Tuesday's election results could cause big changes at the state capitol. Democrats currently control both chambers. But, republicans have a chance of taking them over. But, they have a few obstacles to overcome first.

Democrats got to redraw the district maps last year, so republican candidates have the odds against them. That doesn't necessarily mean they can't win. They'll have to nab six seats in both chambers to take control.

That's not the only issue to watch for with the races. The winners will also have to focus on some big issues. One of the biggest is pension reform. It's been a battle between parties for the past few months.

Democrats want to shift costs for teachers onto school districts, but republicans say many can't afford to do that. They argue communities will be forced to raise taxes. Aside from pensions, the budget is also a big topic especially with things like paying back unpaid bills.
