Church sets up shelter for homeless women

CHAMPAIGN -- More than 30% of the homeless population is single women.
CHAMPAIGN -- More than 30% of the homeless population is single women. In Champaign County, they have no where to go. With temperatures expected to drop below zero, a local church is working to change that.

A shelter will be opened soon, specifically tailored for single women. First United Methodist Church calls it "Austin's Place." It's named after Austin Cloyd who was killed in the Virginia Tech shooting and was a member of the church.

The shelter will be open for overnight stays beginning Sunday. United Methodist started doing this years ago in the winter because members saw women in the homeless community were being neglected.

Women should meet Sunday at the Center for Women in Transition at 6:30 pm. Eight will be allowed to stay in the shelter each night. All of it is being done solely through donations.

To donate, help or volunteer, contact United Methodist Church.
