DECATUR -- Police in one Macon County town have something to celebrate.
Update: 10:08 pm, 9/4/13, Wednesday
DECATUR -- After ten years of pushing for a new building, the police department will finally get it. The city council approved it Tuesday night.

Officers will move from Franklin Street to South Side Drive. The city is renting the facility at $500,000 per year; a move which will not raise taxes.

The 46,000-square-foot building will be renovated. City Manager Ryan McCrady said the new building will make the city safer.

Construction will start soon, and the officers will move in next summer. They will still use the department on Franklin Street.

Under the contract, the city will pay just over $500,000 in rent each year, but renovation and upkeep costs will remain with the building's owner. The rent will increase 5% every five years.
