Concerns Over Coal Mine Proposal

HOMER -- A proposed coal mine has people in Champaign and Vermilion counties concerned.
HOMER -- A proposed coal mine has people in Champaign and Vermilion counties concerned. A coal company is negotiating a deal to buy water from the Village of Homer. It would be used for coal processing.
People are worried about the mine's proposal to discharge mine waste water into Olive Branch, which flows into the Salt Fork River. That water is now used for drinking, water supplies, fish and wildlife, recreation and livestock watering.
Sunrise Coal says it's considering several options, and it would be monitored by a third party. Anyone with concerns can attend a public meeting, Wednesday, May 23.
