Couple excited about same-sex marriage votes

CHAMPAIGN -- Tuesday's vote was something many couples in Central Illinois have been waiting a long time to see. They say November 5 will be a date they recognize like Valentine's Day.

The Senate first approved gay marriage February 14. Tuesday's votes will bring new meaning to the old phrase, "remember, remember the fifth of November." But this time, it's for Illinois.

Kathie Spegal says she was so happy to hear the news while she was at work. She and her partner, Lynn Sprout, have been together for more than a decade.

They say they hoped this day would come, but they didn't know if it would happen in their lifetime. Now they're happy they should be able to make their marriage official next year. Both say they're looking forward to getting the same benefits as other couples in the state.

If Governor Quinn signs the bill, which he says he will, the first day they could get married is June 1, 2014. That's the same day Kathie and Lynn got their civil union a couple years ago.
