CPD connecting through social media

CHAMPAIGN -- Local police say they are connected to the public like never before, thanks to social media.
CHAMPAIGN -- Local police say they are connected to the public like never before, thanks to social media. Last year, the Champaign Police Department launched a social media campaign to improve communication.

Now, each week more than 15,000 people share and re-post information from the department's Facebook page. Whether it is a good deed, or help solving a crime, Champaign Police spokesperson Rene Dunn says social media has been an instrumental tool.

"Through social media, we get to show that side of policing and tell our story. We're in the community, we're proving presentations, risk-watch. This is just another avenue to showcase what we're doing at the police department."
