CHAMPAIGN -- Wednesday was the first day of school for students on the balanced calendar. One of those schools is undergoing a makeover. That's why Kenwood Elementary students were lined up outside the former Carrie Busey school.

It's their temporary home this year while Kenwood undergoes renovations. Teachers wore special shirts to support the $4.5 million upgrade. Students say they're just excited to see their classmates again. School for the rest of Champaign begins August 20.

CHAMPAIGN -- Summer break is almost over for some students. Wednesday is the first day of school for kids on the balanced calendar schedule. It includes Barkstall and Kenwood elementary schools. The first day for regular calendar schools is August 20.

It's probably no surprise we're paying more to send kids back to school. Retailers estimate families with grade school children will spend about $700 on back-to-school expenses. Spending is up five percent from a year ago.
