Arson investigation leads to human remains

RANTOUL -- An arson investigation leads police to a dead body.
RANTOUL -- An arson investigation leads police to a dead body. It was found inside a burned mobile home. Witnesses say two people set it on fire last month.

Brandon Young was arrested that night but police are still looking for the other suspect.  Detectives returned to the trailer Tuesday after neighbors started complaining about a smell. That's when they found human remains inside.

"My wife had put the dog out and said, 'fire!,' I ran out the door and came out here and it was definitely engulfed in flames. Twenty foot flames coming out of the trailer," said Charles Hensley.

He has lived across the street for 15-years. His first thought, save the neighbors.

"I tried to approach the trailer and as I did there was already people standing in the street telling me they are not in there, they are not in there. They said they've been kicked out," said Hensley.

They thought a recent eviction saved the family that had been living there but nobody knew somebody was still inside.

"As soon as we got out of the vehicle, we could smell the fire, the smoke. You know, the smell from the fire, but there was also something rotten dead," said Hensley.

He and his other neighbors let their landlord know and soon police were back on the scene.

"Investigators were out for hours. About 9:00 pm, the fire department showed up with the fire truck and they proceeded to cut into the trailer," said Hensley.

"They we hear up and down the street that there'd been a body pulled out," said Hensley.

An autopsy shows it was a man, but investigators are working to identify the victim and his cause of death.

"It's kind of unsettling for all of us to know that somebody actually lost their life in there, compared to just a fire. It's surprising. Very surprising," said Hensley.
