CHAMPAIGN COUNTY -- A Decatur man faced a judge for the first time Thursday, accused of armed robbery. Investigators say 41-year old Maurion Atkins robbed two Champaign banks Wednesday.

They say he robbed the Prospect Bank first, then went to the Central Illinois Bank. Police found Atkins while he was driving within about ten minutes of the second robbery. He's being held on $500,000 bond.

CHAMPAIGN -- Two area banks were robbed Wednesday. Now, one man is in custody. 41-year old Maurion Atkins, of Decatur, was arrested late in the afternoon. Police say he hit both banks.

The Prospect Bank, at Kirby and Prospect, was robbed about 1:30 pm. While police were busy investigating there, there was a second hold-up at the Central Illinois Bank, on West Springfield. Authorities located Atkins just before 4 pm, through a GPS thrown in with the stolen money. Some of the cash was recovered.

CHAMPAIGN -- Police arrested a man suspected of a bank robbery within hours. 41-year old Maurion Atkins, of Decatur, is in custody. Witnesses say the man walked into the Prospect Bank just after 1 pm. He said he had a gun and demanded money. A GPS device was planted in the stolen money to help police track him down.

CHAMPAIGN -- Police are investigating a bank robbery. It happened about 1:20 pm, at Prospect Bank in the 1600-block of South Prospect Avenue. A man entered the bank, stated he had a gun and demanded money. No gun was shown.

The suspect is described as a black man, in his 30's, medium build, about 5'8", with corn rows in his hair. He was last seen wearing a gray-colored jacket and black vest, plus a multicolored, horizontally striped shirt. He left the bank on foot. Authorities think he may have been in Busey Bank just prior to the hold-up.
