Beckman not naming starting QB yet

CHAMPAIGN, Ill. - Fans hoping for a decision on Illinois' starting quarterback after Saturday's spring game might have to wait a little longer. Head coach Tim Beckman said Tuesday he might wait until fall camp begins before he names a starter. By all accounts, Oklahoma State-transfer Wes Lunt has looked great all spring, and he performed well in Friday's scrimmage at SHG. Lunt seems to still have the inside track on the starting job. Senior Reilly O'Toole and sophomore Aaron Bailey are still getting their opportunities to win that job, and that competition might continue for the next several months before the coaching staff makes a final decision.

"All have done a great job as we progressed through these 13 practices," Beckman said.  "That's why you play a game, and [the spring game] will be a game atmosphere.  I don't think I can jump out and say right now who is going to start.  The competition just makes your team better.  It makes you as a person better."

Beckman added that he and offensive coordinator Bill Cubit have not had any discussions yet as to who should be the starter.  Illinois opens the season August 30th at home against Youngstown State.
