Behind the Badge: Officer David Parsons

MAHOMET -- A local music festival gets better every year. The man organizing the event is a big reason why. After years of planning, the Sangamon River Music Festival is over. It happened this weekend. Police officers were there for safety. One off-duty cop brought the entertainment. WCIA-3's Anthony Antoine introduces us to Officer David Parsons, the man Behind the Badge.

Fun rides, good food and live music seem like the perfect recipe for a good time.

"The River Festival was so small and I saw so much potential in what it could do. Obviously, I never dreamed it could get this big."

David Parsons is the head of the committee responsible for putting on the event.

Seven years ago, he went to the mayor and said, " Hey, I've got some ideas and I think we can make this better."

Since then, it's grown.

"We started out, we didn't have a carnival and now we have a carnival. We started out with only your cover bands, your local bands, and now we're bringing in three national acts this year."

Parsons was born and raised in Mahomet and he loves everything about his town. Did I mention, he's also a police officer?

"It's a great community with great people and most of the people behave here. It's a great town. It's kind of like being a cop. You're helping people still, by giving them entertainment."

He's already working on next year's concert, working with his staff to make next year even better.

"It's not all me though. I've got a great committee to make this big."

Parsons says he enjoys watching his community come together and share in this experience. It's a lot of work, but he will continue to coordinate the festival as long as he can.

"It's a labor of love, but it's great. I love it."

Parsons says this year's festival was the best it's ever been because more people attended than ever before.
