CHICAGO, Ill. - For the last decade Dee Brown has put together a successful basketball career - both in the NBA and overseas - but its what he does off the court that makes him just as proud.

"I need that hobby away from basketball to take my mind off sports and off basketball," Brown said.  "I go into music.  I go into writing my life.  I go into writing other songs, and it became poetry - it became music, and that's one of the things I do that I really enjoy.

His inspiration comes from everywhere - his life, basketball, travel and family.

"I put my heart into it," said Brown.  "I go in there and I don't glorify being this great rapper.  I just go in there and say 'I'm gonna paint this picture for you of what I see, what I've been through.  And it's gonna be good music.  I'm very confident like I am with my basketball game.  I'm confident with my music, and you have to be.  You have to believe in yourself - believe in what you're doing."

He has put out four mix tapes already with a fifth project scheduled to be released soon.  He writes about both the good and bad in his life.

"A lot of sadness, you know comes along with life, losing my grandma, losing my granddad, losing some of my friends with the Chicago violence," Brown said.  "That type of stuff is also like, 'Let me write about this and put it into words."

In his music he goes by "Dunny," as in he's done it all - basketball, travel and raising a family.  He doesn't want people to know its Dee Brown's music, at least until after they listen.

"One thing you should never do is tell people it's you," said Brown.  "Let them hear the music.  It speaks for itself.  You hear the music.  'Aw man, I didn't know it was you.  This actually sounds good.  So you went into it thinking it was gonna be terrible.  That's what most people do"

Dee has recorded more than 300 songs and estimates he has written more than 3,000, but one - Life of Mine - stands above the rest.

"It's all about just enjoying this life of mine.  Everybody has their own life, and you gotta enjoy it.  Whatever's put in front of you, whatever you're going through, whatever you got on your plate, you just gotta enjoy life, so for me I'm just trying to avoid the stress, the drama, just enjoy this life of mine.  Enjoy this life I've been working for."
