DANVILLE -- Mayor Scott Eisenhauer wants to raise $1 million for upgrades to the fire department. Cutting firefighter jobs may help the city get there.

The city council considered options at Tuesday night's meeting. A possible $8 sewer tax could be added, ten jobs could be cut or there could be a combination of both. A final decision is expected in April.

DANVILLE -- Once again, firefighters in the city are at risk of losing their jobs. Tuesday night, the city council will look at ways to make up $1 million to upgrade the department.

An $8 sewer tax hike is on the table, but other options are also being presented. Some include the department losing up to 15 jobs. That's almost 30% of the department. It could happen if the board decides against adding the sewer tax.

Other options include lowering the tax, cutting ten jobs and closing one station, or having businesses pay a higher sewer fee than houses. Either way, the president of the firefighters' union says the possible cuts are cause for concern.

It isn't the first time cuts at the department have been proposed. In the past ten years or so, the department went from 65 to 53 firefighters. There is a petition circulating asking the mayor to save firefighters' jobs.
