CHAMPAIGN-URBANA -- You never get to see the kitchen at your favorite restaurant, but the Champaign-Urbana Public Health District will put its cleanliness on display. CUPHD inspected restaurants earlier this year. Based on those inspections, eateries will be given color-coded placards to put on display starting January 1.

A green placard means satisfactory compliance. Yellow means a re-inspection is required. Red means closure.

The sign must be posted within five feet of the main entrance. It also applies to food trucks, public kitchens and grocery stores. At least one restaurant is looking forward to the system.

Kitchens at UI aren't included. They're not subject to local inspection codes. It's only for the Champaign-Urbana area.

Restaurants in the rest of Champaign County can take part voluntarily. CUPHD says the vast majority of restaurants in the area earned green placards.
