Deadly weekend in area village

FARMER CITY -- A weekend filled with violence is the talk of one local town.
FARMER CITY -- A weekend filled with violence is the talk of one local town. WCIA-3's Jeff Wagner has more.

Saturday morning, a man was found dead in an alley. One day later, a man who had been shot walked into a gas station for help. It doesn't matter where you go, everyone had something to say about what happened. Nearly everyone agreed it was a weekend unlike any other in Farmer City.

In the checkout line at the Niemann Market, customers get more than just groceries. They get the news of the day, like the restaurant fire that happened early in the morning.

Cashier Stephanie Butler passed the gossip to her customers, "I think it was just a wall that got burnt, that's all I know. They said it was an electrical fire, though."

Butler has heard it all, but the stories circulating Monday were different.

"Have you heard, did you hear about this, did you hear about that about the guy at the Huck's and the guy that got murdered?"

Instead of talking about a weekend filled with fun at the Heritage Days, the conversation was consumed by a murder and a shooting.

"It's supposed to be an enjoyable event," said resident John Napier. "I heard that gentleman went into the Huck's and was shot in the back."

Butler added, "I was told it was a carnie that shot him. I've also been told there was a fight up at Casey's between carnival people and others."

Workers at Casey's deny the fight happened on their property and police aren't saying who shot the victim Sunday night. But two men are in jail accused of murder.

Napier said, "Nobody in this town, that I know, has ever had to lock their doors, so therefore I'm locking my doors you know, now."

"It's a big wake up call. It's like the real world can touch you even in a small town that you're used to," said Butler.

James and Alexander Jacquart both face five counts of murder and one count of robbery. The brothers are each being held on $1 million bond.
