Dream comes true for Cubs fan

URBANA -- An area man's dream came true this week and the whole thing was a complete surprise to him.
URBANA -- An area man's dream came true this week and the whole thing was a complete surprise to him. He traveled more than 1,000 miles from home to see his favorite baseball team.

Dick Wyninger has loved the Cubs since he was ten years old. He's dedicated most of this room to his collection of baseball memorabilia.

Seven years ago, Wyninger entered a contest to be the Cubs' number one fan. He made it to the Top Ten, but didn't win. As part of the interview process, he sang Take Me Out to the Ballgame for a panel of judges.

This week, at one of the spring training games in Arizona, he was asked to sing in front of 17,000 fans.

"They gave me the mic and told me, 'you're in charge,'" said Wyninger. "So I did it. It worked out really well. I was tickled to death. It was the highlight of my career of 60-some years of being a Cubs fan."

He didn't find out he was going to do it until the second inning, but he was ready to sing right on top of the dugout during the 7th inning stretch. Wyninger says he had a great time doing it and it was an incredible experience.

He says he still likes to see the Cubs play at Wrigley Field when he can and, if he can't he still tries to watch every game from home.
