SPRINGFIELD -- Work began this week on a projected $1+ million rehabilitation project that will restore one of Springfield's oldest structures to its Lincoln-era appearance.

SPRINGFIELD -- A projected $1+ million rehabilitation project will restore one of Springfield's oldest structures to its Lincoln-era appearance.

Construction on the first floor of Edwards Place begins this week. In the works: wallpaper and new carpeting in some of the rooms, heavy cleaning of numerous chandeliers, and restoration of gas lamp fixtures that are original to the home.

Specialists will also peel away some of the heavy stains and varnishes added to the home's woodwork in the 1920s.

Watch the video to get the behind-the-scenes preview from curator Erika Holst.

Edwards Place is owned and operated by the Springfield Art Association. The historic site will be closed during the rehab, but will reopen later this year. The Springfield Art Association offices, library, and gallery will remain open during construction.

Additional restoration work is needed. For more information, including how to donate and help the SAA meet its challenge grant for the work, link here: http://edwardsplace.org/Involvement/donate.html
