Family looks for man who saved father's life

WESTVILLE -- An man took to social media to find the man who saved his stepfather's life.
WESTVILLE -- An man took to social media to find the man who saved his stepfather's life. It all happened at Turkey Run State Park, in Indiana. Minutes after getting there, the man had a massive heart attack. That's when an off-duty firefighter stepped in. WCIA-3's Gary Brode tell us how he was in the right place at the right time.

Chris Hiilligoss is doing okay and is now out of the hospital, but this 44-year old man knows this story could have had a different ending.

"We were told if that guy wasn't there, then he probably wouldn't have made it," says Holligoss's stepson, Tyler Ritchie.

On Memorial Day weekend, Chris Hilligoss was spending time with his sons.

"Before we even got going, we got out of the car, got the cooler out of the car and then just collapsed."

Hilligoss's heart stopped, but his luck would turn. An off-duty firefighter was parked next to him. He gave Hilligoss CPR for nearly 30 minutes until EMT's arrived.

"He saved our dad's life. I don't know how you repay somebody for that."

Ritchie still isn't sure exactly how to show his gratitude, but he knows a good start is just saying thanks. The problem was he didn't get the man's name and doesn't know anything about him.

"We really had no leads, so that was kind of my last idea to post it on Facebook and get it rolling."

Ritchie posted this message asking friends for help. He got it.

"I was pretty surprised. All of the responses, all of the shares we got, kind of made us feel good.

There were about 650 shares. Only about 40 were people he knew. Within about 14 hours of his first post, he found him: Cody Roby from Southern Indiana. He can't wait to see him again under better circumstances.

"Every night before I go to bed, I play that scenario in my mind."

Hilligoss and his family plan to meet with Roby in Lafayette next week for dinner.
