RANTOUL -- A man and his family rely on food pantries to eat, but pantries rely on you to stay stocked. That's why WCIA-3 is teaming up with the Eastern Illinois Foodbank to collect donations. All money raised will help stock its shelves.

It is the kind of help which will help Jeff McGuire and his family. He dedicated 20 years of his life to fighting for our country. He came home injured and unemployed, so for the past year he has turned to food pantries for help.

"We basically had no income for almost a year," said McGuire.

That made paying for every day things like gas, bills and groceries hard for this veteran.

"We've actually had to move roughly four times. Last year, when we first lost our income we didn't have the funds to get even a Thanksgiving dinner," said McGuire.

But McGuire and his wife wouldn't go hungry.

"Salt and Light allowed us, along with other families, to at least have a Thanksgiving dinner. They supplied the turkeys, the whole nine yards. That actually helped us out with just knowing that we weren't going to have to live off Ramen noodles or peanut butter and jelly sandwiches. We could actually have a meal to sit down to that was hot and kind of just have a good family get together," said McGuire.

His family is about to get bigger.

"She was actually abused. We've actually had her since she was about two weeks old. There was some neglect and different forms of abuse going on," said McGuire.

Jeff and his wife are in the process of adopting the now 18-month old.

"Those places do help out with diapers, they help out with baby food, like when she was on that type of stuff," said McGuire.

And whether or not times are tough, "Money doesn't buy love and that's what it was about," said McGuire.

To participate in our Day of Giving, stop by the WCIA-3 back parking lot Tuesday, December 3 between 6:00 am - 6:30 pm. We're accepting monetary donations.
