ILLINOIS -- The state is tied with Indiana among those with the largest increase in gas prices. The average price per gallon in March was $3.74. That is a quarter increase from the previous month and marks the highest daily average since last September.

It might not improve any time soon. Two Illinois refineries are set to have maintenance in April which could drive prices up even higher. AAA says spring is a frustrating time for drivers and drivers agree.

ILLINOIS -- Gas prices continued to rise in March and both Illinois and Indiana were among the states with the largest price increases over the previous month. Illinois and Indiana drivers are currently paying on average $3.76 and $3.71 respectively for a gallon of regular unleaded. These prices reflect a rise of over $.25 from just a month ago and are also the highest daily average since September 2013 (Illinois) and July 2013 (Indiana).

In March in Illinois, gas prices averaged $3.74, which was up $.26 from February 2014 and $.11 less than a year ago. In northern Indiana, gas prices averaged $3.64 in March, which was up $.27 from February and down $.14 from March 2013.

In April, two refineries in Illinois and one in northern Indiana will be undergoing seasonal maintenance, which may cause a disruption in prices. These refineries should complete their maintenance by the end of April, which should allow gasoline supply to build before the summer driving season.

“Spring is the most frustrating time of year for drivers given that gas prices seem to jump every time you get in the car,” said Beth Mosher, AAA spokeswoman. “We are seeing the same seasonal hikes this spring, but fortunately gas is not nearly as expensive as in recent years.”
