Grant allows department to upgrade life-saving equipment

URBANA --The Urbana Fire Department is upgrading its rescue tools to keep you safe.
URBANA --The Urbana Fire Department is upgrading its rescue tools to keep you safe. It's all thanks to more than $100,000 in grant money from FEMA.

The department is getting new extraction tools; things like the Jaws of Life, to help get people out of vehicles during an accident. The ones they currently have are about 15 years old and showing their age.

They can't keep up with new steel technology in cars. It's reinforced for a driver's safety, but in an accident, the older tools can't cut through as fast. Sometimes the new steel can even ruin tools. That's why leaders thought it was time for a new set.

The department will get four new sets for each of its fire engines. The grant will also pay for some training on the new tools.
