Grant brings new tables to outdoor classroom

URBANA -- Students at King Elementary will have a nice surprise when they get back in the fall.
URBANA -- Students at King Elementary will have a nice surprise when they get back in the fall. There will be five new picnic tables in the school's outdoor learning space. One of the teachers got a $5,000 grant from Lowe's Toolbox for Education, which covered the cost. Students will be able to do more hands-on learning out there. Teachers got to vote on the design they wanted for the new tables.

"The round, green tables won for our school voting project," said Charity Bundren, who won the grant. "I think the students are going to be so excited to see them when they come back. They don't know about this so when they come back in August, they're going to be able to see the tables in the courtyard, along with the plants that have grown so much from all the rain we've had."

The courtyard already had some plants because of a schoolyard habitat grant. With the new seating, about two classes worth of students will be able to work outside here at a time.
