Group rallies for new roadways

SPRINGFIELD -- If you've been on the roads, you've seen potholes and cracks.
SPRINGFIELD -- If you've been on the roads, you've seen potholes and cracks. It happens every winter, but one group says there's a way to keep them from getting so bad.

Right now, when there's a pothole, crews just patch it. The Transportation for Illinois Coalition (TIC) says it should be about prevention instead.

Leaders say the state needs a total revamp of roads and highways because about a third of them will be considered "unacceptable" soon. Harsh winters like this only make them worse.

That's why the group is asking lawmakers for funding for new roads to make them last longer through tough conditions. The group says it will be a big investment up front, and they don't have a dollar figure in mind.

But, they propose a higher gasoline tax to cover the costs and say that's the only way to battle old man winter and keep drivers and cars safe.
