How does this winter rate?

SPRINGFIELD -- With all the snow piling up and frigid temperatures, the National Weather Service (NWS) has been on high alert. It's checking records to find out how this winter ranks with previous years.

There are still several weeks left before the NWS can know for sure, but some meteorologists there think this winter could make it to the all-time top ten for worst ever.

At the end of each month, the NWS reviews how the region stacks up to normal and record-setting levels for snowfall and temperatures. January pretty much took the cake with snowfall above average for most of the state. It was also the eighth coldest on record going back more than a century.

Experts say this type of extreme weather activity is not usual. It's well above-normal. Keep in mind, for some areas, the snowfall has surpassed what's normal for an entire winter. Plus, the 8 - 14 day forecast shows more snow and cold temperatures still ahead.
