URBANA -- For 30 years, volunteers have been putting on a garage sale for the Champaign County Humane Society and for 30 years, the community has come out to show support.

"I do care about animals, so I know the money, it's all going for a good cause," said Jackie Cundiff, who came from out of town just to shop the sale.

"Homeless animals need all the help they can get," said Harriett Weatherford, a volunteer who helps coordinate the sale each year.

Organizing this sale take 4,500 volunteer-hours and ten days, according to Weatherford.

"No one is paid. We do this for the passion of taking care of animals."

Last year, the sale made enough to support medical care at the humane society, which cost over $60,000. This year it's right on track for the same amount. Some shoppers brought their pets along. Carl, a dog, was adopted from the humane society by Jake Potter and his wife last year.

"We figured, since it was so close and it was for such a good cause, knowing that Carl had come from there, it would be neat to come over and see what they had. Looks like my wife found a handful of books. We did our part to support the humane society," said Potter.

"We have wonderful community support. They bring us all of their extra stuff and then buy it back. What could be better?" said Weatherford.

Whatever isn't gone at the end of the sale will either be recycled or given to other charities.

Sunday the public pays one dollar to take whatever they can carry. That way, volunteers have less to deal with after the sale.
