IDOT looking to make driving "greener"

UNIVERSITY OF ILLINOIS -- The Illinois Department of Transportation (IDOT) is teaming up with UI to change the way we get around. IDOT is spending $2.6 million in research to determine how to make transportation systems greener.

UI researchers at the Illinois Center of Transportation plan to look at driving from the wheel to the road. They're starting with what you drive on.

A couple of years ago, they came up with a special type of asphalt made with recycled materials. They're still working on combinations today. They're also looking at fixing traffic congestion which could leave more money in your pocket and less fuel emissions.

Their research will also include other types of transportation like biking. They'll look into improving biking systems encouraging even more people to skip the car ride all together.

The project will also create two new jobs. One is at the research center in Rantoul; another in Springfield to implement the work. No word when that phase begins.
