SUGAR GROVE, Ill. (UI Release) – No. 9 and second-seeded Illinois showed its blue-collar mindset on a cold, drizzly day at the par-72, 7,151-yard Rich Harvest Farms course, posting a 5-over-par 293 – one of only four rounds under 300 – to stand second after 18 holes at the NCAA Sugar Grove Regional. No. 19 and fourth-seeded UAB leads by one stroke over the Fighting Illini, while UI is six shots ahead of Clemson and Kent State, which are tied for third at +11. The key, though, is the nine-shot difference between Illinois and the fifth-place tie between USC and Jacksonville State, since the top five teams advance to next week’s NCAA Championships.
Junior Brian Campbell fired a 3-under-par 69 to stand atop the individual leaderboard, while sophomore Charlie Danielson is tied for sixth after a 1-over 73. The Illini start round two of the NCAA Regional Friday at 9:15 a.m. alongside UAB and Clemson.
