Increase to marriage license fee to go to county

CHAMPAIGN COUNTY -- It will soon cost you more to get married in Champaign County.
CHAMPAIGN COUNTY -- It will soon cost you more to get married in Champaign County. Starting December 1, applying for a marriage license will cost $75. That's more than twice what it costs now.

The extra cash will go towards the county's 2014 budget and will add about $50,000 to its spending. It's just part of the plan to bring in almost $800,000 of new revenue.

The extra money is needed to help pay for new jail programs the county is adding this year. It includes things like re-entry and mental health services for the county jail and making improvements to its facilities.

Some brides-to-be aren't too excited about the increased fee, but $75 is the maximum price a county can set per state guidelines.

The good news is a marriage license is good for 60-days, so if you're getting married before the end of January 2014, you can probably get yours before the fee goes up, just make sure you get it before the December 1, 2013 deadline.

Here's how other counties rank for marriage license fees. Macon and Sangamon are already at the $75 maximum. Douglas County requires a $55 application fee. Coles County is $35 and Vermilion is $30.
